KEYNOTE Gordon Neufeld

The Hidden Keys to Engagement for Primary Students

In our hurry to educate our students and realize basic academic and behavioural outcomes, it is all too easy to neglect the natural contexts which actualize, empower and optimize learning. Put most simply, children learn best when the attachment instincts are engaged and when in the play mode. These contexts are the same for all mammals but only humans are expected to learn in settings that are too often devoid of student-teacher connection and true play. Neglecting these natural universal contexts can result in significant learning inefficiency, disheartened students and discouraged teachers. Our challenge, especially in the primary grades, is to master and employ these hidden keys to engagement and learning in our classrooms, while still keeping our secret power hidden from our students. Dr. Neufeld is the author of Hold On To Your Kids, written 20 years ago with Gabor Mate, and in demand now more than ever. Gordon is the founding director of the Neufeld Institute.
