Join local artist Rachel Sutherland SSA for an outdoor sketching session in our local park. We will explore sketching from nature, and Rachel will introduce us to the observational techniques and approach of 20th century artist Cedric Morris.
Cedric Morris (1889 -1992), artist and plantsman, worked outdoors in the garden he created at Benton End in Suffolk. He established a school of painting there and influenced a generation of artists with his ideas on the connections between art and nature.
The exhibition Cedric Morris: Artist, Plantsman and Traveller is being held at the Granary Gallery, Berwick upon Tweed from 7th June to 12th October. Opening times 11- 4 pm Tuesday - Sunday, entrance is free.
We will meet in Castle Vale Park at 10 am for a two hour session of sketching. Bring your preferred materials, and come prepared for the weather. The park has shelters in case of rain and some wooden bench seating. Toilet facilities and a cafe are nearby at the railway station.
Beginners and more experienced students are equally welcome. There will be 11 places available in each session
Please note that although we will carry out a risk assessment for this outdoor event, it is taken wholly at the participant’s own risk. Therefore, participants are required to take full responsibility for their own health, safety and wellbeing whilst taking part. In particular, participants must ensure that they have suitable/weather appropriate clothing and footwear.
Castle Vale Park is generally accessible to all moderately fit persons, but may not be suitable for persons who have reduced mobility, due to steps and sloping ground. If in doubt, the onus will be on participants to establish the position in this regard before booking.
Materials to bring:
Sketch books A4 (max) and A5 (or smaller)
Oil pastels
Pastels
Pencils
If you wish to paint, not obligatory due to outdoor challenges, please bring water colours, water pot, paper towels, brushes and 2 sketchbooks with heavier paper. This allows you to work in one whilst the other is drying.
This session will be about observation, composition and colour. The results will be in the form of rough informative sketches which could provide a basis for the workshops held in conjunction, or as stand alone sketching practice.
