About this event

Wabi-Sabi Encaustic Mini Workshop

Embrace the beauty of imperfection with Wabi-Sabi, the Japanese philosophy that celebrates imperfections and the transient nature of life.

In this 3-hour workshop, you'll explore encaustic wax as your medium. It’s a perfect vehicle for artists who want to dive into this aesthetic, where imperfections are not just accepted but celebrated.

Experience the joy of play and creativity as you learn how to incorporate materials like twigs, shells, sand, eggshells, and feathers into your artwork.

This workshop will take place at the relaxing La Fab Art and Cultural Center in Chelsea, Quebec, just 12 minutes from downtown Ottawa.

Ideal for beginners, you’ll create several postcard-sized wood panels while mastering basic encaustic techniques.

Perfect for a fun outing with a group of friends, coworkers, or that special person in your life!

All supplies are included, so come ready to explore and express yourself!

What Is Encaustic?

Encaustic, derived from the Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in,” involves melting natural beeswax and damar resin (crystallized tree sap). This versatile medium can be used alone for its transparency or combined with pigments for color.

In this fun hands-on workshop, you'll learn various techniques step-by-step, including:

  • Melting and layering wax
  • Creating smooth or textured surfaces
  • Collaging and embedding tissue paper
  • Adding gold, silver, and bronze leaf
  • Incorporating alcohol inks into the warm encaustic medium

Join us to explore the creative possibilities of encaustic art!

About the Artist

Amanda Pierce

Amanda is an active published member of the International Encaustic Artists Association, a certified level 4 Powertex instructor and a member of the National Capital network of sculptors.

A native of Saskatchewan, Canada, Amanda Pierce  spent her childhood summers exploring and playing outside in nature.  With no television or phones to distract, her imagination introduced her to the world of art and her inherent ability to capture nature on canvas was born.  In the early years, this skill influenced by artists such as:  Charlene Stauffer and Betty Warnock.

Now residing in Ottawa, Canada, she has been mentored by phenomenal artists worldwide .  As an artist who thinks outside the box and believes we are all artists of the soul, Amanda has been honing and honoring her artistic gifts for over 20 years.   True to her Indigenous roots, Amanda derives her inspiration from nature.  Through encaustic and mixed mediums she captures the intensity, fluidity and texture of the natural world in her art.   This spontaneous medium where hot wax, resin and pigment meets wood panels, Amanda  intuitively manipulates color and texture to create luscious, magical works of art that allow the viewer to be lost in a meditative trance of infinite possibilities.
