Social workers for social justice: Integrating advocacy into our practice

NSCSW members are invited to explore strategies for integrating advocacy within social work practice.

<p><strong>Every person is more than a diagnosis.</strong></p><p>Mental health requires whole person care that is publicly funded, grounded in community, trauma informed, culturally safe, and focused on prevention rather than crisis. </p><p>Join N Siritsky to learn more about how the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW) is developing community advocacy efforts to transform our health care system and mental health services. Come learn about some concrete steps, strategies and tools and join in this community conversation: <em>In what ways can the work of our social justice committee be explicitly integrated into our social work practice, both on a clinical and community level?</em> </p><p><strong>You can b﻿ecome a trained listener advocate</strong>; learn how to use motivational interviewing skills to inspire advocacy readiness, by helping people link their personal sources of stress to larger systemic issues, and then providing resources so that they can join together to address the root causes of their distress.</p><p>In preparation for Advocacy Day on March 24, 2023, this session will be offered multiple times in February and March; our members are encouraged to choose the session that best aligns with their schedule.</p><h1>Dates</h1><ul><li><a href="https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/531393160247">February 8 at 12  noon </a></li><li><a href="https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/531387192397">February 17 at 12 noon</a></li><li><a href="https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/531388335817">February 27 at 4 p.m.</a></li><li><a href="https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/531388426087">March 8 at 12 noon</a></li><li><a href="https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/531389509327">March 17 at 12 noon</a></li><li><a href="https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/531389559477">March 21 at 12 noon</a></li><li><a href="https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/531390943617">March 23 at 4 p.m.</a></li><li><a href="https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/531392026857">March 27 at 4 p.m.</a></li></ul><h1>Eligibility</h1><p>Must be a current member of the <a href="https://nscsw.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">NSCSW</a> to attend; all active, associate, retired, and student members are welcome. There is no other prerequisite for this session.</p><p>You'll need a device that can use <a href="https://zoom.us/test" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zoom</a>, and a reasonably reliable internet connection.</p><h1>Category</h1><p>Participating in one of these one hour sessions can fulfil part of NSCSW's newly mandated requirements for all Nova Scotia social workers to complete <strong>annual professional development  related to the pursuit of social justice</strong>.
