KEYNOTE SPEAKER

We are please to announce that Dr. Peter Stoett, Ontario Tech University, will be speaking about the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (ISBES) Assessment on Invasive Alien Species: Bad and Good News

Peter Stoett is Dean of the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities at Ontario Tech University in Oshawa, Ontario. Prior to joining on Ontario Tech in 2017 he was Director of the Loyola Sustainability Research Centre at Concordia University in Montréal. In addition to his work as co-chair of an IPBES Assessment, he served as a Coordinating Lead Author for Global Environmental Outlook 6: Healthy Planet, Healthy People, the flagship publication of the United Nations Environmental Programme. He was also a Lead Author for the regional North American Outlook report, which was published in 2017. Dr. Stoett has ben researching and publishing on global environmental policy and human rights issues for nearly four decades.

The IPBES Assessment on Invasive Alien Species: Bad and Good News

The IPBES Assessment on Invasive Alien Species was conducted over 4 years with over 150 contributing experts from over 50 countries. It was approved by over 140 countries at the Conference of the Parties of IPBES in early September in Bonn, Germany. The Assessment provides ample evidence that IAS are a severe threat to biodiversity on all levels, including to human health and culture. But it is also evident that great strides have been made to prevent and control IAS, and that coordinated action in the future could have a very positive impact provided adequate resources are devoted. Dr. Stoett will discuss the evolution of the Assessment and some of its key findings; he will also make special reference to the role invasive plants play on a global scale as they contribute to biodiversity loss and climate change.
