About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

The Mozart Project presents the Canadian premiere of David Bowser's A Sea Lion Symphony, a live music experience with film and narrator, featuring the Odin Quartet.

A Sea Lion Symphony is a documentary film about the sea lions of Point La Jolla, California. Shot from land, air and underwater, the film captures fascinating scenes revealing instinctive behaviours and playful activities of these intelligent, curious, gregarious and social wild animals. Bulls fight for dominance, pups are born to caring mothers and learn to nurse, young sea lions play in tide pools, adults surf at high tide, sea lions dive underwater exhibiting their agility, strength and speed.

This film by David Bowser features his original musical score and poetry by Carol Archibald to tell the story of A Sea Lion Symphony.

This sneak preview of A Sea Lion Symphony is a fundraiser event in support of post-production music recording costs needed to finalize the documentary for presentation at film festivals, on television and streaming options. Thank you for your support!

At this unique event you will:

  • experience the performance of David Bowser's original sound track played live in coordination with the screening of the documentary film.
  • learn more about the project during a pre-performance chat with film director and composer, David Bowser.
  • learn about sea lions during a Q&A session following the performance.
  • support a project whose goal is to raise awareness and foster empathy and respect for wild animals, nature, the environment, the planet.

Your donation will help us bring A Sea Lion Symphony to the big screen!

Please note, the performance will take place at the Palmerston Theatre, at the Palmerston Branch of the Toronto Public Library, but this is not a Toronto Public Library event.

The Mozart Project enhances classical music appreciation across communities and operates the Toronto Mozart Players, a professional ensemble dedicated to engaging audiences and enriching lives through high quality performances of concert music. While the Toronto Mozart Players specialize in the music of Mozart and his contemporaries, the ensemble performs a broad repertoire from the early eighteenth century to the twenty-first century under the direction of artistic director and conductor David Bowser. With commitment to Canadian repertoire and commissioned works by Canadian composers, the Toronto Mozart Players present world premieres along with classical repertoire. The Mozart Project also provides professional development and performance opportunities to talented emerging artists through the Toronto Mozart Vocal Competition and Toronto Mozart Violin Competition both of which include mentorship and training in master classes and performance.
