This workshop explores how Islamophobia impacts our educational spaces. Beginning with an overview of the term Islamophobia and an exploration of its historical presence in Canada, the workshop examines how Muslim students, staff and faculty are impacted by negative public discourse about their faith. The workshop provides case studies, resources, and recommendations for leaders and students in educational spaces to support efforts to promote equity and inclusion and to ensure that the campus remains a safe environment for all.

Format: Mixed presentation and group activities. Case studies provided are curated from reported incidents and events on Canadian post-secondary campuses. Action plans addressing systemic Islamophobia will be shared.

About the facilitator: Jannat Firdous is the Manager of Education Programs at the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), where she draws on her background as an educator to foster safe and inclusive learning environments for Muslim students, staff and communities. Passionate about empowering Muslim identities in Canadian schools, Jannat is dedicated to providing tools for identifying and challenging systemic inequalities, including Islamophobia, that impact educational experiences. At NCCM, she leads anti-Islamophobia workshops and advocates for the needs of Muslim identities, ensuring they feel safe and welcomed in all educational settings.
