Presenter:

Graham Hicks

Now fully retired, Graham Hicks had a 30-year journalism career with the Edmonton Sun, from 1981 to 2020. He was best known for his five-times-a-week column Hicks on Six, and continues to be amazed that he was actually paid to think, talk and dream about this city we live in.

In the community, Graham was the founder and spokesman for the annual Edmonton Sun “Adopt-A-Teen” Christmas project, providing Christmas gifts for over 8,000 teens from low-income Edmonton families.
He founded and organized the Edmonton Sun's annual ATCO/Edmonton Sun Christmas Charity Auction, last held in 2018. Over some 10 years, the auction raised about $2 million for four charities - United Way, Catholic Social Services, the Stollery Children's Hospital and the Christmas Bureau.

In 2003 Hicks chaired the $2 million Catholic Social Services “Sign of Hope” Campaign. Now in his mid-70s, he continues to volunteer with the social agency and currently sits on its board of directors.Graham has received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for community service, Sun Media’s J.D. Creighton Award for lifetime achievement, the Grant MacEwan College’s Distinguished Citizen Award and The Rotary Club of Edmonton 2008 Integrity Award. As part of his retirement send-off, Edmonton's then-Mayor Steve Mandel declared November 8, 2010 to be "Graham Hicks Day" in Alberta's capital city.Since retirement, he has co-authored three books, including "Our Neighbour's Keeper" a biography of Catholic Social Services founder Father Bill Irwin, "Home By Dark" - Peter Koziol's stories of growing up in East Edmonton in the '70s, and a soon-to-be-published investment guide, "Understanding Risk," with retired financial adviser and good friend Ron Hiebert. When the spirit moves, he still occasionally writes commentary in his own HicksBiz.com blog, but mostly he keeps busy helping his wife of 37 years, Maria, baby-sit and entertain five pre-school grandchildren ranging in age from five to two months.
