About this event

Advance your astrophotography skills during a workshop under the dark skies of Banff National Park with award-winning night photography expert Monika Deviat. Designed for photographers with night photography experience, this course delves into the more intricate techniques and specialized equipment that can be used to capture the beauty of the night sky. Learn advanced post-processing techniques to bring out the finest details in your images, and discover the art of planning and composing breathtaking nightscapes that showcase the wonders of the night sky using more than a single exposure. Whether you're aiming to photograph the Milky Way, nebulas, or distant galaxies, this workshop will provide you with the knowledge and skills to take your astrophotography to the next level.

Participants should be comfortable focusing in the dark (most of the time, this can be refined), taking single-exposure night sky images (manual settings), setting up their own tripod and camera, and should be excited about spending as much time as possible out in the dark. This is a small group workshop, giving participants lots of one-on-one time with the instructor.

If you're new to night photography, want a refresher, or want to focus on everything you need to know about the Milky Way, please check out the Milky Way March workshop.

"I have attended several of Monika’s workshops in Waterton and Banff. I have also had the pleasure of hearing her talk at the Banff Centre and in Pincher Creek at the Lightchasers Conference. Monika brings an enthusiasm and sense of wonder to all of her workshops and classes. Technically sound, very well organised and - lots of fun! Her sense of humour helps students to relax and "be in the moment.”

Monika’s technical knowledge of settings and composition really help to make improvements in your photography skills. Her willingness to follow up and help long after the workshop is over is really important. There are always lots of questions AFTER the classes and Monika is always available and gracious.

Highly recommended for the newbie or experienced photographer for any type of photography. But her Astrophotography workshops will open up a whole new world!"

Monika Deviat is an award-winning photographer, educator and speaker and Nikon Ambassador based in Alberta, Canada. Monika’s photography spans multiple genres and demonstrates her versatility, technical skills, and unique perspective. Her career began with concert photography, taking her across North America to shoot hundreds of bands and dozens of festivals. In 2015, she shifted from shooting stars on stage to stars in the sky. Night photography has become Monika’s personal favourite genre, and it goes hand in hand with her landscape and adventure images. She is driven to capture unique scenes that inspire a sense of wonder and appreciation for the wild places surrounding us. Her photos have been published in national and international books, magazines, and webzines. As a workshop instructor, Monika is passionate about sharing knowledge and creating memorable experiences.

"Monika is obviously a great photographer who takes pride in the moments that she creates. What is not so obvious, and more importantly in my opinion, is that she enjoys educating people and is a great person. I have had the pleasure of taking a night photography editing course taught by her and have been in attendance for one of her night photography seminars. The passion that she has for the art of photography definitely shows through. In her course, she takes the time to teach. When she helps, she will give you her undivided attention at making sure you succeed in what you are trying to do. If you do not understand something that she presents, she will patiently ensure that what she is trying to convey makes sense to you.

Furthermore, she enjoys sharing information and this is evidenced by her personal blog and other articles that she has published. These are the traits of someone who truly enjoys teaching about their craft.

I can say that in the past years that I have known her, she is a pleasure to be around because she not only remembers people but takes the time to actually talk. If you have an opportunity to learn from her, either by taking a course, listening to her talk, or hiring her as either as an instructor or as a photographer, please do so. You will have no regrets."
