Baby Friendly Initiative: 20 Hour/2.4 days Breastfeeding Course (Level 1)

Date: Wednesday, Oct 23, Thursday, Oct 24 & Friday, Oct 25

Time: 08:30 to 16:30 daily for two days and 08:30 to 12:30 for the last day

This certificate is designed for hospital and community health professionals to explore evidence-based, best practice that protects, promotes and supports breastfeeding.

Learner Outcomes

The aim of this course is for health care providers to:

  • Understand and be able to effectively and confidently implement care that facilitates the initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding; including how to navigate common breastfeeding challenges
  • Improve awareness of the importance of breastfeeding on infant health, family health, community health, and environmental health.
  • Refreshing their knowledge base with emerging evidence-based information about human lactation
  • Learn the importance of informed decision making including parent-centered conversation, how to determine what information and support a parent needs to make an infant feeding decision, and information to keep all babies as healthy as possible

Intended Students:

Any HHS health care professional working with breastfeeding families (priority to postpartum/OB staff, but other staff encouraged to register and will be accepted based on availability in each session)

Textbook: Materials provided at course, no pre-reading required

Evaluation Method: Completion of course content over 2.5 education days, no formal exam. In addition, 4 hours of clinical practice required for completion of course.

SiROC Cancellation Policy

The SiROC Cancellation Policy applies to this course. Requests for transfer, substitution, or refund will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Please provide any documentation to support your request.

Course Substitution & Transfer:
If you cannot attend the course, you may substitute your registration to a colleague at no additional charge. Please email outreach@hhsc.ca with your name and the name of the colleague who will be taking the course in your place. Your replacement must meet the prerequisites for the course.

To transfer to an alternate course date, please email outreach@hhsc.ca with the date of the course you wish to transfer into. You may transfer your registration to an alternate date up to one week before the start date of the course you are transfering out of.

Only substitutions will be granted less than one week prior to the course start date.

Course Refund:
Refund requests will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and depend on the date of the request. Please use the Eventbrite registration system to request a course refund. You can manage your registration at www.eventbrite.ca/mytickets.

Please note that a registration processing fee was paid to Eventbrite and is subject to their refund policy. The following refund policy applies:

- More than 3 weeks before the course start date = 100% of tuition will be refunded.
- Between 2-3 weeks before the course start date = 75% of tuition will be refunded.
- Between 1-2 weeks before the course start date = 50% of tuition will be refunded.
- Within one week of the course start date = No refund. If you cannot attend the course, you may transfer your registration to a colleague at no additional charge.

No refunds will be given for "no-shows."

SiROC reserves the right to cancel or reschedule the course due to unforeseen circumstances. If this happens, you will be rescheduled to the next available session and given the option to choose from future classes if the rescheduled date does not work for you. No refunds will be issued.

The Simulation, Resuscitation and Outreach Center offers training and recertification courses of Heart and Stroke (HSF) Basic and Advanced Life Support (ALS) courses, plus the advanced and essential Canadian Pediatric Society Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) courses for healthcare providers. We also provide training for community-based healthcare providers to equip them with essential skills needed to care for complex care patients in the community.
