Join SFU’s Sexual Violence Support & Prevention Office (SVSPO) for their 2024 Consent Matters featured event, Beyond the click: The Importance of Digital Consent: an online Conversation between Alexa Dodge and Val Hathiraman, facilitated by student, Salome Mengo Morales. Alexa and Val will share practical insights, and experience researching and supporting people who have been impacted by Tech-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence.

This event is free and open to everyone.

Guest Speaker Bios:

Alexandra Dodge is an Assistant Professor in Criminology at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is currently researching informal, restorative, and legal responses to technology-facilitated violence. Alexa is part of the DIY Digital Safety research project, this team of researchers is dedicated to mobilizing research about digital safety in the community. Val Hathiramani (She/Her) is a South Asian first-generation immigrant and settler on Coast Salish lands. She is a dedicated advocate for consent, communication, and care. Currently she works at the Intimate Image Protection Service, a pioneering B.C initiative addressing the non-consensual distribution of intimate images. She provided support and advocacy services at the Sexual Assault Support Centre at the University of British Columbia, supported street-based sex workers in Downtown East side, provided crisis support to survivors of Intimate Partner Violence and worked with survivors of Human Trafficking in Nigeria. In her free time, she loves to read and spend time with her cat and loved ones.

Salomé Mengo-Morales is a fourth-year International Studies and World Literature student at SFU. She is originally from Argentina but has been living in Canada for the past 8 years. She started volunteering with the Consent Champions at Douglas College and continued her work and education regarding sexual and gender-based violence prevention and victim support at SFU with the Active Bystander Network. Salome got the chance to participate in informative events, streaming interviews and radio talking about sexual violence prevention.
