About this event

The Cambridge Kendo Club is taking new beginners for two weeks this January. Kendo is free to try out for anyone in the beginner intake period in January, for all skill levels and anyone over the age of 7. It is a perfect time for you anyone you know to try out a new activity and take part in a martial art that encourages self-improvement, confidence, and discipline with a positive, supportive, and inclusive community.

These beginner trial & intake periods are the only time that try kendo for free. Each trial practice will be identical so while you can sign up for multiple practices, they will be the same until the trial period is complete and the Beginners' Course begins. The Beginner's Course will begin in Late January until April. People who join for the trial practices are invited to join this Beginner's Course during the course's first week at the end of January.

For other questions, please see the FAQ section below. Per date, there will be 20 total slots. Register early to secure your spot!

Frequently asked questions

How much does the club cost?

For new beginners coming for this intake and trial period, it is free for the month of January. But once people decide they want to stay, the fees are $80/month for adults, $40/month for juniors 18 and younger.

Do I need any equipment or any uniform?

The club will provide any spare equipment at first until you decide to stay. In terms of clothing, regular athletic clothing is required.

Can I join after the first week of the Beginner's Course?

Yes, we have a grace period of about 1 month where you are put on an accelerated course to catch up to everyone else who joined. However, if you join during this time, you are required to pay your membership fees up front.

Am I too old to start kendo?

No, and it's actually pretty common in Canada for people to start learning kendo when they reach middle age or even retirement age.

I can only come to one practice a week, is that all right?

Yes, it is okay but twice a week is ideal. It is like a course you take in school, so you might be playing catch-up. Do your best to show up for the one practice per week you can and give it more than 100% and you can keep up too.

What is the minimum age to start kendo?

Rule of thumb would say about 7, but it would depend on their maturity level and/or ability to listen and follow instructions for an hour or so.

How many practices do I need to attend in the trial period for me to be able to stay and join?

One. But once the end of the trial and intake period rolls around, all attendees must be paying members of the Cambridge Kendo Club.
