What is it about?

Have you ever wondered what a day in the life looks like at your dream job? Thought about working in an industry but not sure that you’d enjoy it? Know exactly what you want to do but don’t know how to get your foot in the door? These are questions that MentorAbility was created to help answer!

In this session, Jamie with MentorAbility Alberta will share information about the MentorAbility initiative – how they work with supported employment service provider partners to integrate this career exploration program into their toolkit of services, empowering individuals who experience disability to participate in one-time mentorship experiences. These mentorship moments promote a better understanding of industry on the side of the mentee, and a better understanding of disability on the side of the mentor. Learn who can participate, what a match could look like, and how it can help everyone involved to gain confidence in moving forward!

Who is facilitating?

MentorAbility Alberta is part of a national initiative that helps facilitate short-term mentorship opportunities for people experiencing disability as a way for them to gain experience, industry knowledge, and network connections to take them to the next step in their careers. We also support our mentorship partners to attain their goals in inclusion and accessibility.

Jamie Thiessen (they/them) has been working in supported employment at Gateway Association for three years, using their own lived experience, education in human resources, and lifelong advocacy for equity and justice to grow capacity with employers and advance opportunities for people who experience disability in the workforce.
