Frequently asked questions

What is a Highly Sensitive Person?

Highly sensitive people (HSPs) take in more environmental, sensory, and cognitive data than the other 80% of people, giving us an advantage in many areas and challenges in other areas to manage. It is a normal, inherited and highly valued trait that has been studied through psychological research.

How do I know if I am highly sensitive?

HSPs are deep feelers and thinkers. They tend to have increased empathy, feel deeply, notice details, and therefore naturally feel more easily overstimulated and need lots of downtime. Visit hsperson.com and highlysensitiverefuge.com for more information and tests to assess if you are HSP.

Is an HSP the same as an introvert?

Nope! While many HSPs are also introverts, sensitivity is a different but related quality to introversion/extroversion. According to Psychology Today, introverts are primarily fatigued by socializing, while sensitive people are fatigued by any kind of stimulation, including socializing.

Can I join if I am from outside of Markham?

Yes! While this group creates a unique space for Asian HSPs to connect on the intersection of asian, immigrant experience x high sensitivity, these experiences are not limited by geography.
