The Cosmic Northside - the Afrofuturistic Canadian Art Conference is a two-day gathering at the National Gallery of Canada in the nation's capital of Ottawa. The conference is taking place in service of championing Black creatives who have been pushing the imagination and representation of Blackness through the arts. The conference seeks to address the sentiment of what is next for the Black community after the UN International Decade for People of African Descent (2014-2028). Funded by the Department of Heritage and Culture with the Government of Canada, the conference will feature high-profile Afrofuturists Canadian creatives, engaging roundtable and panel discussions, interactive workshop sessions, dynamic musical performances, spectacular digital artwork displays, and numerous relationship-building opportunities. This conference will be a supernova for the Canadian art canon and will usher in a new frontier for the Black Arts Industry.

Get ready to jump into the conference in full force with the Lift Off Gala. The lift off gala is the opening event for the conference’ with speeches by Michaëlle Jean Foundation, Black Sun Comics and a special live music performance. Attendees will get the chance to hear from some of Canada’s best Afrofuturistic artists and the chance to network and be inspired. We encourage you to wear formal African, or Afro-diasporic or Wakandan, or Afrofuturistic inspired attire, including but not limited to cosplay.

About AstroSankofa:

AstroSankofa Arts Initiatives is a federally incorporated B3 (Black-led, Black serving and Black-focused) not for profit organization and artist collective dedicated to supporting Black creatives interested in exploring or utilizing Afrofuturism in public art interventions, community engagement and web 3 ventures. Our motto, "ancestrally brilliant, futuristic bold," reflects our mission to inspire progress while honouring the past. We aim to uplift Black Canadian legacies, close the Black artist pay gaps, and address the lack of opportunities and education for Black artists in Canada.

About the founder:

Quentin VerCetty is a multi-award-winning artist, educator, and Afrofuturist storyteller. He is the co-editor of the first Canadian Afrofuturism art book, "Cosmic Underground Northside," which inspired the conference. He is the first and currently only Black Canadian-born artist to create multiple permanent public art pieces nationwide. He has been mentoring and opening doors for others.

La conférence a pour but de promouvoir les créateurs noirs qui ont poussé l'imagination et la représentation de la noirceur à travers les arts. La conférence cherche à répondre à la question de savoir ce qui attend la communauté noire après la Décennie internationale des Nations unies pour les personnes d'ascendance africaine (2014-2028). Financée par le ministère du Patrimoine et de la Culture du gouvernement du Canada, la conférence présentera des créateurs afrofuturistes canadiens de haut niveau, des tables rondes et des débats passionnants, des ateliers interactifs, des spectacles musicaux dynamiques, des expositions d'œuvres d'art numériques spectaculaires et de nombreuses occasions de nouer des relations. Cette conférence sera une supernova pour le canon artistique canadien et ouvrira une nouvelle frontière pour l'industrie des arts noirs.

Préparez-vous à entrer de plain-pied dans la conférence avec le gala d'ouverture. Le gala de lancement est l'événement d'ouverture de la conférence, avec des discours de la Fondation Michaëlle Jean et de Black Sun Comics, ainsi qu'une performance musicale spéciale. Les participants auront l'occasion d'entendre certains des meilleurs artistes afrofuturistes du Canada, de nouer des contacts et d'être inspirés. Nous vous encourageons à porter des vêtements africains, afro-diasporiques, wakandais ou d'inspiration afrofuturiste, y compris, mais sans s'y limiter, le cosplay.

À propos du fondateur :

Quentin VerCetty est un artiste, un éducateur et un conteur afrofuturiste plusieurs fois primé. Il est le co-éditeur du premier livre d'art afrofuturiste canadien, « Cosmic Underground Northside », qui a inspiré la conférence. Il est le premier et actuellement le seul artiste noir né au Canada à avoir créé plusieurs œuvres d'art publiques permanentes dans tout le pays. Il a joué un rôle de mentor et a ouvert des portes à d'autres personnes.
