Event Description:
Celebrate the culmination of the The Roots of English Black Arts & Culture Program with an inspiring showcase of poetry, calypso performances, and handcrafted creations, highlighting the rich traditions of English Black Arts and Culture. This event brings together the vibrant artistry born from months of cultural workshops, presenting the talents of poets, singers, crafters, and storytellers who have honed their skills in preserving and celebrating our shared heritage.

What to Expect:

  • A lively evening of spoken word, rhythm, and song capturing the essence of Griot traditions.
  • Stunning handcrafted works inspired by English Black cultural legacies.
  • Dynamic calypso performances that blend history, storytelling, and infectious rhythms.
  • Showcases by participants of the English Black Arts & Culture workshops, featuring emerging poets, singers, and crafters who have nurtured their artistry throughout the Roots Program.

Richardo Keens-Douglas, a proud Grenadian-Canadian, is a multifaceted artist whose career spans acting, directing, choreography, storytelling, and playwriting. Born in Grenada and residing in Canada and Grenada, he has captivated audiences across Canada, the USA, England, and the Caribbean, as well as at international storytelling festivals.

He has written and directed notable plays such as The Nutmeg Princess and Uncle: The Story of Sir Eric Gairy, and recently produced Grenada's 50th Independence Anniversary Celebration and the hit play Journey to Gold. As a cultural ambassador, he’s helmed major events, including the National Carnival Queen Pageants and the Tourism Expo.

Keens-Douglas’s accolades include an M.B.E. from HM Queen Elizabeth II, a Caribbean Hall of Fame induction, and a Dora Award nomination for The Obeah Man. He has published 12 children’s books, with Freedom Child of the Sea commemorating Canada’s Bicentennial of Abolition. A true trailblazer, he continues to inspire through arts and culture.
