DESCRIPTION

This talk will review the current MAiD landscape and outline the core of the disability communities concerns with MAiD as currently constituted in Canada using case examples and testimony by disabled persons. Finally, the talk will consider the role of social workers in this difficult and emotionally fraught arena.

PRESENTER

Tim Stainton is a professor at the School of Social Work and Co-Director of the Canadian Institute for Inclusion and Citizenship, University of British Columbia. He holds a PhD from the London School of Economics on disability rights and social policy. Prior to his academic career, he worked on deinstitutionalization of people with disabilities in British Columbia and as Head of Policy and Programs for the then Ontario Association for Community Living. He has consulted nationally and internationally on issues of system change. He has published widely on disability rights, history, ethics and services and on euthanasia and disability. He was a founding member of the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disability (IASSID) Special Interest Research group on ethics and is a Fellow of IASSIDD. He was a member of the Federal review panel hosted by Council of Canadian Academies on Medical Assistance in Dying. He has been a frequent commentator on MAiD in the media and has testified at both Quebec and Federal parliamentary committees studying MAiD.
