About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours 30 minutes

Come join us on this bus tour where you'll be introduced to the life, art and writing of Emily Carr, Victoria's most beloved artist, through the 15 historic locations that form the backdrop to her life story.

We'll meet up at For Good Measure at 579 Niagara Street in James Bay at 11:30am. After introductions and a short presentation on Emily Carr, we'll head over to the Carr House for a one hour guided tour by their expert staff. After that, we'll vist her nearby sister's houses (also historic sites), as well as the House of All Sorts, Beacon Hill Park, her father's store on Wharf Street, the Emily Carr Statue, the Crystal Gardens where she gave her first solo exhbition and an important speech about modern art in 1930 and other historic locations where she painted, sketched and wrote about.

Another of the highlights will be a visit to Emily's gravesite in Ross Bay Cemetery in Fairfield, one of the most visited gravesites there. The charms of this historic Victorian-era cemetery are its breathtaking ocean viewsm stately mausoleums and towering trees, along with it being the final resting place of Emily Carr.

On our way to pay our respects to Emily in Ross Bay, we'll check out our two newest historic locations that she made special, one in Fairfield another in Oak Bay.

During the drive to the various locations, we'll look at laminated copies of Emily's most famous paintings. Her paiknting Crazy Stairs (1928) was purchased for $3.3 million by the Audain Art Museum in Whistler in 2013, breaking her previous record. It is the third highest highest amount paid at auction for any Canadian artist, and the highest paid at auction for a Canadian female artist. If only she know!

The next to last stop on the tour is the place where Emily died and reportedly still haunts. The tour concludes where we began, at For Good Measure around 2:30pm.

We'll meet up at the outdoor patio at For Good Measure at 579 Niagara Street, at the corner of Government and Niagara, at 11:30am and arrive back about 2:30.
