    Join us for a guided tour at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, a serene urban regional park, between July 10 - July 17. Discover the inspiring legacy of Richard St. Barbe Baker, a visionary global conservationist who pioneered forest protection and tree planting ahead of his time. As part of Historic Places Days, this immersive event invites you to uncover the “Invisible” Histories that have shaped our environment and reflect on one individual’s profound impact on global conservation efforts.

    Nestled within the expansive 326-acre woodland, which includes the stunning 19-acre West Swale wetland sanctuary, you’ll have the opportunity to explore and appreciate the natural beauty nurtured through St. Barbe Baker’s visionary initiatives. Learn about his journey, beginning in 1922, when he first raised awareness about deforestation and climate change, culminating in a lifelong dedication to fostering a greener planet. St. Barbe Baker’s contributions were celebrated with an honorary doctorate from the University of Saskatchewan.

    This year’s Historic Places Days emphasizes diversity and inclusion, celebrating the diverse historical narratives that enrich our heritage. Our newly developed guide encourages participants to reflect on their roles as stewards of history.     National Historic Places Days Contest!

    The contest described for the tour events at George Genereux Urban Regional Park and at Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area during Historic Places Days is designed to encourage people to visit and engage with historic places across Canada. Here's a breakdown of how the contest works:

    Contest Duration: The contest runs from July 10 to July 17, 2024, coinciding with Historic Places Days.

    Entry Requirements: Participants are encouraged to visit a participating historic place, such as George Genereux Urban Regional Park or Richard St. Barbe Baker Park, during this period. They can either take a new selfie, photo, or short video at the location or share a cherished photo or video from a previous visit.

    Posting Guidelines: To enter, participants need to:

    Post their photo or video on Instagram or Facebook during the contest period.
    Use the hashtags #HistoricPlacesDays and #HPDContest2024 in their post.
    Tag the specific historic place they visited @GeorgeGenereuxPark or @RichardStBarbeBakerPark .
    Tag and follow @nationaltrustca on Instagram or Facebook.
    Parks Canada Support: If the historic place is a Parks Canada site, participants should also include the hashtag #ParksCanada to show support for the event's partner and major sponsor.

    Content and Caption: Participants are encouraged to share the story of their visit in the caption of their photo or video. This could include what the place means to them personally or any interesting historical facts they've learned.

    Prizes:

    Grand Prizes: There are three grand prizes, each consisting of $500 cash for the participant and an additional $500 for the historic site they tagged in their entry. One grand prize winner will be drawn on Sunday, and the other two will be drawn on the final day of the contest.

    Daily Prizes: Daily prizes include 7 Parks Canada Passes, 7 Canada’s History Subscriptions, 7 Canadian Geographic Magazine Subscriptions, and 7 National Trust Memberships. Daily prize draws start from the day after the launch day of the contest.

    Extra Entries: Participants can earn an additional contest entry by sharing posts about the photo/video contest on their own social media accounts. They should tag @nationaltrustca and their favorite historic place @GeorgeGenereuxPark or @RichardStBarbeBakerPark in these shared posts.
