Not long ago, supporting local food producers was built into our economies and social lives. But today, food production is increasingly obscured and concentrated: Alberta alone has lost 1,000 farmers per year between 2001 and 2021.
Young Agrarians formed in 2012 with a mission to support the next generation of farmers and food lovers, and to create a more diverse, resilient, and interconnected food system. Alex Pulwicki will share how, as a peer-to-peer learning network, they are supporting farmers in building a future to look forward to.
Similarly, consumer connection to food production has become fractured. One tactic to shift this trend is agri-tourism: this type of enterprise invites consumers to experience and understand food production, develop regional and seasonal palates and create direct-to-consumer relationships. Pierre & Keleigh Cormier from ClearThink Group are experts in the field of agri-tourism and will share insights from Alberta and around the world on this instrumental aspect of farm business.
