About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours
Patagonia Calgary/Banff/Victoria is proud to be a presenting partner of the upcoming Meltdown exhibit, A Drop in Time. In celebration of the opening of the exhibit at the Whyte Museum on January 25th, we will be hosting a presentation and meet-and-greet on January 16th with accomplished alpinist, photographer and founder of Guardians of the Ice Jim Elzinga! Doors will open at 6:30 PM with the presentation beginning at 7:00 PM.

The presentation will include a sneak peek and behind-the-scenes view of the upcoming Meltdown exhibition and insight into Jim's work as an alpinist, photographer and planetary change agent. Beer will be provided by Banded Peak Brewing, all donations and beer sales will be donated to Guardians of the Ice.

Jim Elzinga has over 50 years of experience as an influential alpinist, leading and guiding multiple expeditions throughout North America, the Himalayas and the Andes. In 1986 he led the most successful Canadian expedition to Everest (Everest Light) and received a rare Award of Recognition from the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation recognizing his leadership of this historic expedition. Jim is also an accomplished photographer having worked as the climbing cinematographer on the award-winning film "Challenge the Canadian Rockies" and being one of the first Western photographers to document the ordinary lives of people in China. Currently, Jim has focused his passions on Guardians of the Ice, documenting the growing impact of human activity on the mountain world and the rapidly developing downstream effects on natural and human systems around the planet.

Guardians of the Ice is a nonprofit organization focused on the rapidly shrinking Columbia Icefield as a leading indicator of the worldwide climate crisis. Their purpose is to effectively engage the public to build support for a low-carbon future. To learn more about their cause, go to their website.
