You already know Global Underground is not your regular jam session.
Join us on Tuesday, December 3rd for an electric night of live, improvised music led by our resident band:
Matias Recharte
Selçuk Suna
Demetrios Petsalakis
Tyler Emond
We'll kick off the night by listening together to Lulaworld Records artist Ahmed Moneka's sophomore full-length album Kanzafula (released in May 2024), plus an intimate artist Q&A with Juana Gogó!
Ahmed Moneka
Drawing on his Afro-Sufi music heritage, Ahmed Moneka delivers a joyful and transcendent mix of African grooves and Arabic/Iraqi melodies informed by funk, soul and jazz. Reflecting on his journey from Baghdad to Toronto. The actor, artist, activist and his all-star global ensemble draw listeners into an ecstatic celebration of life, exploring love in all its forms alongside nostalgia for one's home, through original compositions and Middle Eastern classics.
Moneka's Arabic jazz ensemble, which includes contributors from Iraq, Greece, Turkey, Sudan, Algeria, Syria, Brazil, and Canada, will tour material from its sophomore full-length album Kanzafula (released in May 2024) across North America, making its European debut in 2024 and 2025.
Kanzafula, which refers to evolution and luminescence that comes from music, blends elements from three continents: Moneka’s birthplace in Iraq, his ancestors from Kenya, and the birthplace of his daughter in Canada. Ahmed Moneka is a descendant from the victors of the first Black revolution that occurred in Basra (south of modern-day Iraq) in 869-883.
Gather your friends, invite your crush for a mid-week date or come solo and connect with fellow music lovers over a drink.
Unmissable!
Global Underground is co-presented by BSMT254, KUNÉ, Uma Nota Culture, Lula Music and Arts Centre and LulaWorld Records. Presented with support from Ontario Creates.
