Description
We are beaming with pride to present Chef Chris Whittaker and his team from Forage fat the helm for the Vol. 28 Greasy Spoon Diner on June 26th at Save on Meats.
What Chis is all about:
Chris Whittaker’s philosophy is simple: respect our land and water. Use local suppliers: small farms and wild food. Nose-to-tail cooking. On premises baking and preserving. Use all resources wisely and – in the end - waste nothing. From being the driving force behind the uber-sustainable Forage and his newly opened (November 2015) Timber - to his unpretentious, adventurous food, Whittaker is one of Vancouver’s most interesting and passionate chefs and a proud member of the prestigious Chefs’ Table Society.
Whittaker is an active partner and supporter of the Environmental Farm Plan, Ocean Wise, Eat Wild, Farm Folk/City Folk and numerous other tireless organizations all equally committed to promoting the sustainability of our food systems. This focus on local is integral to the Metro Vancouver food economy, from farmers to consumers, and everything in between.
The path to sustainability has been an easy one for Whittaker as conservation and the use of local products is how he lives. Bee-keeping at home, preserving fruit and vegetables to have a “canless” kitchen for Forage, Timber and their catering arm, Forage Catering, and working with small lot farmers throughout the year proves Chris takes this philosophy very seriously. He is a sought after speaker within the hospitality and food service industry as well as being a keynote speaker at events such as Metro Vancouver’s Food System Policy conference. Whittaker is also a passionate hunter and fisher.
Forage and Chef Chris Whittaker have been recognized for their outstanding efforts by both Vancouver Magazine Green Award and Where Magazine Green Table Network Award. Most recently Whittaker was inducted in the BC Restaurant & Food Service Association Hall of Fame. In 2016, Chef Whittaker was named one of western Canada’s Foodies of the Year by Western Living Magazine.
What the Greasy Spoon Diner fundrasing event is all about:
The Greasy Spoon Diner is truly a one of a kind charity event.
The best chefs in the world volunteer their time to cook with the legendary Save On Meats team to create an elegant set menu, dining experience inspired by their own creative interoperation of diner food.
We have two seatings at 5:30pm and 8pm.
Each service is paired with cocktails made by award-winning bartenders, as well as craft beer and wine. The best part: it helps feed and employ members of our community, and it’s an opportunity to re-connect with friends old and new, with a purpose.
Enjoy an exceptional meal with people who share the same values, and hear about the work being done to service those less fortunate.
The Greasy Spoon is the easiest way to make a big impact while having a great time, every time.
Funds raised by the Greasy Spoon Diner series support A Better Life Foundation (ABLF), which aims to empower those who are struggling with addictions and mental illness. By providing food security, education and employment training ABLF supports individuals, while strengthening the quality of community life in the Downtown Eastside.
A Better Life Foundation also supports the ongoing Being Hungry Sucks campaign:

At A Better Life Foundation (ABLF) our mission is to support local community by providing upward mobility through food security, education, training and employment. Our vision is to feed our community and by doing so, alleviate many of the social problems our community faces. Food security is key to well-being. ABLF raises critical funds to provide nutritious food to women, children, and those on assisted living through daily meal programs prepared at the Save On Meats Diner located in the heart of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside at 43 W Hastings.
ABLF's daily meal program (in partnership with Atira/BC Housing) provides ~1,000 nutritious meals to marginalised members of the community every single day, building a path to a food-secure future for all Vancouverites. Proceeds from the Greasy Spoon Diner series go directly towards our daily meal program; so you can have a great night out while making a big difference to those in need.
Thank you for helping us provide 2 million meals (and counting!) in our community.
