About this event

For a while I've been wanting to share more world music in my home and so I approached David Wall with this in mind. I met David when he was a teenager as I was close to his mom, Nomi Wall. Recently, I saw a video recording of David and Waleed Abdulhamid performing Shalom Salaam (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8lh2UW6Bro) from the oratorio "We still dare to dream". Deeply moved, I decided to reach out.

David graciously agreed to perform in my home with pianist Marilyn Lerner with whom he recorded the ciritcally acclamed album entitled “Still Soft Voiced Heart: New Jewish Lieder”. Based on modern Yiddish poetry, the album blends Jewish roots with a range of musical influences, including jazz, gospel, and traditional Yiddish music. David Wall’s soaring vocal style seamlessly intertwines with Marilyn Lerner’s piano accompaniment creating a distinctive sound that transcends genre boundaries.

“Such authenticity continues to be an exception to the classical, pop, jazz and world-music landscapes…" (transcending territorial distinctions) and "mystically and quite effortlessly constructing a bridge between the music of their bloodline and the music of their heart.”

DAVID WALL - David Wall is a Toronto-based composer, singer and community worker. He has written scores for a long list of film, television and experimental projects. His career as a singer has included fronting bands with funny names, like The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir and The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band. His audio installation work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Oakville Galleries, Toronto History Museum and elsewhere.

MARILYN LERNER - Pianist Marilyn Lerner's musical interests range from straight-ahead jazz to klezmer to contemporary classical music. She has shared the stage with artists as diverse as Tito Puente and Steve Lacy. A formidable composer, Lerner has won the Montreal International Jazz Festival award for best composition. She both performs solo and with a variety of musicians, her two trios - the Ugly Beauties (Matt Brubeck-cello, Nick Fraser- drums), and with drummer Lou Grassi and bassist Ken Filiano, based in New York City – and luminaries of the klezmer revival scene, including Frank London, Alicia Svigals, Susan Watts and our current guest, David Wall.
