About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

Folktales are stories we use to teach children – and remind ourselves – of crucial things: family closeness, the way words fool you and the ways in which death enters the world. Are there deeper purposes to horror stories? Do they teach us about the land? If so, what do we do, as immigrants, with our folktales? Do they still have purpose, removed from the places where they originate? How are we connected to the sometimes terrifying stories we tell our children, the ones that haunt us as adults.

André Alexis is Toronto Reference Library's Writer In Residence for fall 2024, with a focus on horror and literature of dread.

André is an author of novels, short stories, and plays. His 2015 novel, Fifteen Dogs, won the Scotiabank Giller Prize, Canada Reads, and the Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize.
