About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Join us for an interactive workshop on integrating secondary materials from demolition and deconstruction into new, low-carbon building projects. This effort focuses on maximizing the value of salvaged resources by reimagining how materials flow in a sustainable, equitable, and low-carbon way.

Our recent Material Flow Analysis highlighted that incorporating reclaimed materials is key to building a circular city. However, challenges remain in aligning salvaged materials with market needs, particularly in the construction industry. This workshop will bring together demolition and deconstruction companies, builders, contractors, and municipalities to explore solutions. We'll discuss how to create a robust market for these materials and how deconstruction can reduce embodied carbon while reclaiming valuable resources.

Through collaborative discussions, we will identify opportunities to update Richmond’s Demolition and Recycling Material Bylaw to better facilitate the flow of secondary materials into building projects, creating a more adaptive built environment in line with our circular economy goals.

The workshop will cover three main topics:

1. Unlocking Opportunities in Deconstruction Practices: Exploring the benefits and advantages of modern deconstruction techniques.

2. Building the Market: Integrating Secondary Materials as Raw Resources in Construction and Industry: Strategies to develop a robust market for reclaimed materials, transforming them into new resources for construction projects and industry symbiosis.

3. Embodied Carbon Savings: Maximizing Opportunities: How deconstruction and material reuse contribute to lower carbon emissions in the built environment.

Who Should Attend

Industry professionals involved in the built environment, including architects, engineers, developers, contractors, consultants, municipal representatives, demolition and deconstruction companies, material suppliers, and other stakeholders interested in advancing circular economy practices, deconstruction, material reuse, and identifying opportunities for low-carbon materials in construction projects.
