About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Looking to develop your understanding of soil health and the results of a soil test? Join us Friday, October 18th from 1 pm - 4 pm to hear from Dr. Yamily Zavala from Chinook Applied Research Association’s Soil Health Lab. Dr. Yamily will discuss how to interpret the results of a soil health analysis and the importance of healthy soil. Stay for networking and refreshments.

This event will focus on an exploration of samples taken by local producers. We will explore how to understand the results of a soil health analysis, key indicators to watch for and tests that can be done at home to help monitor soil health. Soil health tests vary from a standard soil test because they measure the physical and biological balance of the soil as well as the chemical makeup to provide a better indication of soil health than a stand soil test that focuses solely on chemical make-up. We will also discuss the importance of healthy soil, what happens in the soil and how we affect the soil. While the focus of the day will be on learning about Soil Health analysis, there will be time after the talk for networking and socializing.

Dr. Yamily manages the Soil Health Lab at Chinook Applied Research Association, the first of its kind in Western Canada. Dr. Yamily has experience working as a crop production consultant, as well as managing CARA’s Crop and Soil program and the Soil Health Lab. Yamily is dedicated to developing producers’ knowledge on soil health and believes increased knowledge around soil health is the best way to develop interest in soil health.
