Who and Why should I plan to attend this workshop?

South Island farmers, land managers, and food growers with an interest in better understanding the unique properties of their soils.


  • Foundations of soil fertility management from sampling in the field to best practices for integrating the tools of soil laboratory analysis with soil management decision making.
  • Interactive classroom session with field demonstrations on sampling and soil texturing.
  • Registered participants will be eligible for a complementary soil laboratory analysis.

About the instructor:

DeLisa Lewis, PhD

Co-Owner and Lead Farm Operator, Green Fire Farm, Cowichan Valley, BC

DeLisa Lewis is co-owner and operator of Green Fire Farm, a diverse 40-acre farm in the Cowichan Valley. She has over 25 years experience as a certified vegetables organic farmer, and 17 years experience with soil health focused on farm research and field trials. DeLisa holds a PhD in Soils and Agroecology from the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at UBC, and is a research associate with Dr. Sean Smukler and the Sustainable Agriculture Landscapes Lab, supporting Islands regional field trials to better understand soil health management practices.

Is there parking?

Yes, park outside the main gate 4. It is a short walk from the gate to the gazebo, where we will begin.

What should I wear?

Farm and weather appropriate clothing, including waterproof footwear and rain gear.

Is this event indoors?

No, this event is held in the field and in an outdoor gazebo.

Is this event accessible?

We will be navigating uneven terrain. Areas of the farm have tamped gravel, wood chips, and grass paths. There is an accessible porta potty.
