Dorland Music and the Radisson Hotel Sudbury are thrilled to announce an energetic night of music featuring dynamic saxophonist, Patrick Smith. Patrick provides a stimulating musical adventure that will delight the audience.
Patrick Smith is a Toronto-based saxophonist originally from Ottawa. He has honed his craft under the mentorship of acclaimed musicians Mike Murley, Kelly Jefferson, and American saxophonist Mark Shim.
Patrick has established himself as a dynamic and sought-after performer in the Canadian music scene. His extensive touring experience spans Canada, the US, and Europe, where he has performed with notable acts such as Legends of Motown (featuring Michael Dunston and Gary Beals), My Son The Hurricane, Chelsea McBride’s Socialist Night School, and Forever Seger. In addition to his work with these groups, he maintains a busy freelance schedule, collaborating with renowned artists such as Order of Canada recipient Dave Young, Juini Booth (bassist for McCoy Tyner and Tony Williams), Yemen Blues, Erez Zobary, Heavyweights Brass Band, Dee Dee and the Dirty Martinis, Eighth Street Orchestra, Dan Pitt Quintet, King Cardiac, Queen Pepper, Kazdoura, and Shout The Band.
As a bandleader, Patrick leads three distinctive projects. His quintet highlights original modern jazz compositions, delivering hard-hitting performances that push the boundaries of contemporary jazz. His chord-less trio, 3-Oh, takes inspiration from the spirit of Sonny Rollins, performing a mix of jazz standards, original compositions, and creative interpretations of more contemporary material. Meanwhile, his group Pangea fuses UK jazz, neo-soul, world music, and R&B, channeling the global connectivity of the 21st century through a reimagined spirit of John Coltrane. This ensemble features some of Toronto's top musicians, including Darryl Joseph-Denie (Ahi, Listening Room), Kae Murphy (BADBADNOTGOOD, Whitney), and Jon Catanus (Erez Zobary, Diskarte).
Patrick has an impressive discography spanning several releases over the past five years. In 2018, he debuted with the EP Still Searching, featuring original compositions by his quintet. In 2020, he co-led The Archives of Eternity with vibraphonist Mark Hundevad, releasing Uranium 238, a project that brought the avant-garde jazz compositions of Raphe Malik (trumpeter for Cecil Taylor) to life. In 2023, Patrick released two singles with 3-Oh ahead of their forthcoming EP: a reimagining of Billie Eilish’s I Love You and an intense rendition of Joe Henderson’s Afro-Centric. His debut album with Pangea is set for release in January 2025.
Currently, Patrick is recording the debut full-length album for his quintet while continuing his active freelance work throughout Southern Ontario.
