Native Plants of the Wabanaki Forest: Community Learn & Work Party

Storm date: Sunday Oct 20

Free registration required on Eventbrite.

Get to know some of the native plants of the Wabanaki forest AND help us plant them in the tiny Wabanaki forest!

In the fall of 2023, our community planted phase two of our food forest: a tiny Wabanaki forest. Since then, it has had a tough time, being heavily browsed by deer. Most plants have survived, but barely. In September 2024, we installed a deer fence and are now ready to continue planting - with a better prospect of thriving!

We are excited to care for this part of our project, where we can learn about the Wabanaki forest, the ecosystem it supports, and the relationship we can develop with the forest. In this workshop you will learn about some of the native plants of the region, their needs, and how to plant them.

This is a hands-on work experience suitable for fit adults and mature teens. You will be digging, shoveling, wheelbarrowing, planting smaller trees and shrubs, and watering.

Physical challenge level: medium

Dress for the weather: work boots, work clothes and gloves.

Bring: drinking water/beverage; a snack will be provided.

If you have it: a shovel, pick-axe/mattock.

Frequently asked questions

Who is this workshop for?

This is a free workshop for strong adults and mature teens who want to learn how to plant in poor soil.

What should I expect?

Expect to learn more about some local native plants. You will work with a dozen or more people, preparing holes and planting trees and shrubs in the food forest. You will be using wheelbarrows, shovels, buckets and other tools to move heavy soil and plants. You will get dirty.

What should I bring?

Bring weather-appropriate work clothes, footwear and gloves. A nutritious snack will be provided. Bring your own hydration vessel; if you have special dietary requirements, you may wish to bring your own snack.

What about the weather?

We will proceed as long as the weather is okay or even if there is a bit of drizzle. If it looks like really bad weather is forecast, our rain date is the next day, Sunday October 20.
