This series provides an intimate look into lives of Ukrainian families who immigrated to Edmonton, AB Canada due to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. In each episode we spend the day with a Ukrainian family as they cook a traditional Ukrainian meal and bear witness to the realities of war.
Each ticket to the event includes complimentary Ukrainian appetizers, which will be served between 6pm-7pm. Guests are welcome to arrive anytime between 6pm-7pm. The film will be screened between 7pm-8:30pm with an introduction from the director and producers. A Q+A with the families featured in the film will follow. People are welcome to stay and socialize once the screening is complete.
A Note from the Producers
This series was Executive Produced by Iryna Stryapunina who was born in Kyiv, Ukraine & directed by her husband Stephen Robinson, who was born in Edmonton, Canada.
At the outset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Stephen and Iryna began thinking of ways to support Ukrainians impacted by the war. What started as a small idea in April of 2022, with the support of TELUS Originals, was able to grow into the six part docu-series Новоприбулі | Newcomers.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2014, and full-scale invasion in 2022, the world has witnessed stories of destruction, death and heroic Ukrainian resilience on a massive scale. Новоприбулі | Newcomers chose to zoom in and focus on the humanity behind the headlines. The series offers viewers a chance to connect with families whose lives were violently uprooted and transplanted to a new country. In each episode, food acts as a piece of the life they once knew, even as they recount the horrors of war.
We hope that this project serves as a reminder of the people whose lives have been irrevocably changed by this invasion. This war is more than casualties, military equipment or land.
More than ever, Ukraine and the people impacted by this war need our support.
