About this event

In the morning, Cybèle Young will start us on the adventure; exploring the paper and the forms it will take - as well as the various ways to make it move - hinges, folds, wire armatures, etc.

After lunch we will set up our animation spaces and lighting, using simple phone apps to shoot our stop motion videos. As time will be limited, this workshop is intended for simple experimentation, so come with an open mind and be ready to play.

The Japanese Paper Place will send out notification regarding recommended apps a couple of weeks before the workshop.

Participants are asked to bring:

  • smartphone – essential!
  • notebook and pen
  • small sharp scissors, (if you have them)
  • object(s) to include in a stop motion video that you would like to integrate with the paper
  • your lunch!

All other materials and tools will be supplied by The Japanese Paper Place.

Simple phone tripods will be needed. If you have your own, please bring it.

Please note
This workshop is scheduled to run until 5pm to allow time for experimentation and sharing.

About Cybèle Young

Cybèle Young is an internationally renowned multidisciplinary artist and author best known for her intricate Japanese paper installations and children’s books. More recently, her practice has encompassed photography, ceramics, stop-motion film, video, and kinetic works.

Young’s sculpture juxtaposes abstract and familiar motifs that evoke unexpected dialogue, forming relationships that often surprise the viewer and beckon imaginative interpretation. Across all disciplines, Cybèle’s work is constantly challenging notions of perception and identity, acting as a bridge between the abstract and the poetically concrete.

Cybèle studied sculpture and printmaking at OCAD and has since mounted over twenty solo and thirty group exhibitions, and published fourteen children’s books. She has received multiple grants and awards, including the Canada’s Governor General’s Award, and most recently a Chalmers Fellowship recipient.

Currently, she is on the design team for a new work by the award-winning dance-theater company Kidd Pivot.

Cybèle’s sculptural work is represented by Forum Gallery in New York and LA.
