Families in New Westminster have been waiting for years for the Fraser River zone elementary school (also called Simcoe Elementary). The concept plan for this much-needed school has been sitting with the Treasury Board for over a year waiting for approval. Yet no funding has been announced despite the urgent need for this school being recognized by the Ministry. At this rate, the school will be at or over capacity on its very first day.
Our MLAs and the Ministry of Education and Child Care told us to be patient. We were assured a funding announcement last fall and when that didn’t happen, we were told to wait until the spring budget. Now, the spring budget has come and gone and our district is again left waiting. Our kids can not wait any longer!
New Westminster is the fastest-growing school district in Metro Vancouver. Every school in our district is already well below area standards, with no space left for portables to accommodate our continued rapid growth. Including their delays approving the concept plan, the Ministry has three spent years sitting on this urgent need, failing to provide students with the space they require to learn. This is unacceptable for the students and staff of School District 40.
