About the Event:

Did you know that maritime shipping accounts for approximately 80% of global trade of physical goods?

The sector consumed approximately 9.1 EJ in 2018, relying primarily on heavy fuel oil and marine diesel. Shipping creates 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with an estimated 1076 Mt in 2018 (Yang et al., 2020). The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set ambitious targets for emissions reductions, aiming to cut them by 40% by 2030 and net zero by 2050 (IMO 2023 Strategy, Resolution MEPC.377(80), Adopted on 7 July 2023). The challenges of transforming an entire sector are daunting.

Professor Andy Hira along with guest-speaker Hossein Haghparast will discuss options for maritime shipping, including energy efficiency, alternative fuels, and constructing a global regime that would move us closer to net zero.

About the speaker:

Hossein Haghparast is a petroleum engineer with over 10 years of experience in the energy sector. His academic and professional endeavors have focused on cleaner fossil fuels and sustainable crude production with a reduced environmental footprint. He was involved in the early stages and implementation of the global IMO 2020 initiative, which aimed to lower the sulfur cap in marine fuels. Currently, he is engaged in the production and trading of low-sulfur fuels for the maritime industry.
