Welcome to our Safeguarding Workshop: Policy and Practices to Protect Vulnerable People! Join us at Volunteer Victoria for an interactive session where we will discuss important policies and practices to ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals.
This safeguarding workshop is designed for staff and volunteers in organizations that host programs where volunteers work with children, youth, and vulnerable adults. The training aims to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills to effectively safeguard individuals.
The workshop covers key aspects of safeguarding, including:
• Understanding safeguarding principles and responsibilities
• Recognizing different types of abuse, abusers, and their indicators
• Responding appropriately to safeguarding concerns
• Implementing best practices for creating safe environments
• Navigating reporting procedures and legal obligations
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, participants will:
• Understand safeguarding principles and practices
• Identify common warning signs when assessing and managing volunteers
• Identify the types of maltreatment and their warning signs
• Learn how to create safe and supportive environments for children and vulnerable adults
• Develop skills to respond effectively to disclosures and concerns
• Gain confidence in fulfilling their safeguarding duties
Who Should Attend?
This workshop is suitable for volunteers, volunteer managers, leadership volunteers, or program managers and Executive Directors who are working with, or managing programs serving children, youth, or vulnerable adults.
No prior knowledge is required, making it appropriate for staff and volunteers at all levels.

Facilitators:
Lilaine Galway has worked with volunteers and vulnerable clients for more thantwenty-five years. Her positions with literacy and federated child and youth serving organizations helped her hone her specialist skills as she assessed and managed thousands of volunteers who stepped up to work with vulnerable people. As an experienced volunteer management professional, she spent years strengthening policies and practices to manage volunteers in high-risk positions.
Lisa Mort-Putland is a Certified Volunteer Administrator who works directly with volunteer-led organizations and volunteer managers to help them build their skills and practice. Lisa is the Executive Director at Volunteer Victoria as is the current board chair of Volunteer Canada.
