FAQ

What are the workshop levels?

The workshops are open to all levels of dancers, but some exposure to these styles is required to get the most out of the training. The instructors will provide techniques/variations tailored to each student's current level to ensure everyone is appropriately challenged.

What to bring for footwear?

Latin Dance shoes are recommended, but not required. Any clean pair of shoes that is comfortable and not grippy on the floor will work.

For newer dancers, we recommend wearing comfortable flats with a non-sticky sole that you can dance in for multiple hours (Fuego sneakers, Taygra sneakers, leather soled ballet flats, suede soled jazz shoes, and Toms are all great options).

You may also choose to dance in socks if you do not yet have appropriate footwear.

What to wear?

Workout outfits are typically what people wear to the daytime workshops, but other outfits may be appropriate as long as they are comfortable enough to dance in (not too tight, not too short, not too warm, allows you to move your arms, hips, torso, and rest of the body easily, not a tripping hazard, etc.).

Can we book private lessons?

Our instructors will have extremely limited availability for privates. Payment is required in advance to secure your time slot. Email yeg.dancer.events@gmail.com to book.

Can you tell me more about the venue?

Sugar Swing Ballroom is a beautiful special events venue with sprung hardwood floors and bar service in the Whyte Avenue neighbourhood.

While in the space, attendees are subject to the Sugar Swing Code of Conduct ensuring a safe space to learn and practice the art of partner dancing.

What are the venue's policies?

No outdoor shoes inside the studio. Bring a clean pair of indoor shoes (non-marking) to ensure we do not damage the studio's floor.

What should I bring for food?

A refillable water bottle and whatever you may like to consume during the breaks. Let us know in advance if you have any allergies.

Do I need to bring a partner?

You do not need to register with a partner as we will rotate partners throughout.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring a partner?

We rotate partners throughout the dance class and the social dancing portion, so we have lots of singles that come out to the events and you do not need to come with a partner.

What role should I register as?

Anyone can lead and anyone can follow, all we ask for is that you stay in your chosen role for the duration of the dance class to ensure you don't miss important details and assist in maintaining order during partner rotations.

What’s the dress code?

You can choose to dress up or not, but make sure what you wear is comfortable enough to dance in (not too tight, not too short, not too warm, allows you to move your arms, hips, torso, and rest of the body easily, not a tripping hazard, etc.).

What kind of shoes should I wear?

Latin Dance shoes are recommended, but not required. Any clean pair of shoes that is comfortable and not grippy on the floor will work (dress shoes, Fuego sneakers, Taygra sneakers, leather soled ballet flats, suede soled jazz shoes, Toms, etc.). No stilettos please! They put marks in the floor.

Is there a coat check available?

Sugar Swing Ballroom has a designated area for outdoor shoes as well as a rack to hang your coats. Dancers usually place their personal items such as purses either on the chairs setup against the wall or on the floor near the coat rack area.

Where can I park?

Sugar Swing Ballroom has a small paid parking lot behind the building and there is lots of free street parking in the neighbourhood.

Feeling a little nervous…

No pressure! We’re very beginner-friendly, and generally you’ll find yourself among lots of other new people.

How do I stay informed?

Our YEG Dancer Public Events Insider Facebook group has a listing of upcoming Latin dance events and we also use the Facebook group's chats for more time sensitive announcements.
