Frequently asked questions

What does "Sankofa" mean?

Sankofa is a concept originating from the Akan people of Ghana, meaning "go back and get — or retrieve it." It encourages us to reflect on the past to move forward with wisdom and strength. This idea of looking back to reclaim and celebrate our history is central to the theme, Return to Joy.

Organized by

The Hogan’s Alley Society advocates for Black Vancouverites who have endured the legacies of urban renewal and their erasure from the official historical narrative.

Through our initiatives we hope to build the capacity of racialized and marginalized communities to participate in city building.
