Her work was longlisted for the 2021 CBC Poetry Prize. Her second collection, Bad Weather Mammals, is now available. She’s currently the Editorial Coordinator for Arc Poetry Magazine and a Marketing Assistant for Brick Books.

Matthew Walsh, MW, is a poet from the Maritimes whose first book, These are not the potatoes of my youth, was shortlisted for the Trillium poetry award and the Gerald Lampert award. Their second book, Terrarium, released this year with Icehouse/Goose Lane. You can find new poems from them in Bad Dog Magazine’s September 2024 issue.

Andrea Scott is a mother, writer and high school teacher living in Victoria, B.C., the traditional territory of the Lekwungen peoples. She won the 2022 Geist Erasure Poetry Contest and was a finalist for the FBCW 2022 Literary Contest and the 2020 CBC Poetry Prize. Her first chapbook, In the Warm Shallows of What Remains, was the winner of the 2024 Raven Chapbooks Poetry Contest. Andrea has just completed her MFA in Creative Writing at UBC, and is working on a YA novel in verse.

Michael Christie is the author of the novel If I Fall, If I Die, which was longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Kirkus Prize, was selected as a New York Times Editors' Choice Pick, and was on numerous best-of 2015 lists. His linked collection of stories, The Beggar's Garden, was longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, shortlisted for the Writers' Trust Prize for Fiction, and won the Vancouver Book Award. His essays and book reviews have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Globe & Mail. Greenwood, his most recent novel, was longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize.

A limited number and selection of books by the authors may be for sale after the event. We recommend you bring cash if you intend to purchase books but some authors may also use Interac e-transfer. Please feel free to bring any books you may own by any of the authors should you like to have them sign them after the readings!

Frequently asked questions

When should I arrive?

Doors will open at 5:45 pm. We encourage early arrivals so that you will have time to get a drink or snack before the event starts.

What is there for parking nearby?

There is a wide variety of free street parking spots available without a time limit after 5 pm in Sidney, and a 3-hour parking lot behind the building.

Is the space accessible?

Our brewery has a wide range of accessible seating, an accessible washroom, and no stairs. We will have a microphone arranged for the speakers for ease of hearing. If you require any accommodations, please do not hesitate to email Sierra at sierra@smallgods.ca!

How do reserved seats work?

Reserved seats through EventBrite ticket sales will be for our horseshoe area that is in close proximity to the writers. Due to space limitations, the event often requires communal seating arrangements, so individuals and smaller groups may be sat together.

Are food and drinks available for purchase?

The brewery has a wide range of beers available, as well as local wine, cider, and non-alcoholic options. Food choices include incredible deli sandwiches, snacks, salad, and soup. There will be breaks between writers to refresh your drinks and snacks as desired.

Are children and youth permitted at the events?

Content warning: adult themes will be featured in the readings and may not be appropriate for children. Minors (people under the age of 19) are only permitted in the brewery in the company of their own parent or legal guardian or a responsible adult.
