Social Media for Scientists: How to Build Strong Online Presence
Social media is a powerful platform for scientists to connect, collaborate and mobilize the community. From #distractinglysexy to #DontAskAlice, social media has been an important catalyst for positive change in the community. Hence, building a personal brand through strong and authentic online presence is key to communicating your science to the public, making connections and gaining competitive edge. If you’re not up with the times, you will lag behind your peers!
This hands-on session, co-facilitated by social media strategist Lina Duque and Dean Imogen Coe, will show you how to craft a personal brand, make connections in your field and network with influencers in science.
Learning Outcomes:
- Build a profile on Twitter, increase your following and network with scientists and influencers
- Create a compelling profile on LinkedIn and use it strategically as a thought leadership platform
- Use social media to bring media attention to your work
- Learn about the importance of business cards
After the workshop you will have an opportunity to get your head-shot taken. If interested, please come dressed in professional attire.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop.

Imogen Coe, PhD
Dr. Imogen Coe is Dean of the Faculty of Science at Ryerson University and an award-winning scientist on a mission to make science fun and accessible to the local community. Internationally recognized for her pioneering research in membrane protein cell biology and biochemistry, Imogen has presented her research at conferences and seminars across the globe and has nearly 70 scholarly papers, book chapters and abstracts to her credit. She is passionate about advancing women’s leadership in STEM and is a board director with hEr VOLUTION, a non-profit that provides innovative education and employment services to girls and women in STEM. Lina Duque, MBA
Lina Duque is a social media strategist and executive branding coach whose work has appeared in the Globe and Mail, Forbes and Huffington Post, among others. She is advisor to senior executives and entrepreneurs on developing thought leadership through creating strong online presence. Lina teaches social media for executives at Ryerson University’s Chang School. She’s a frequent presenter at schools and organizations, including McGill University, University of Toronto, York University, Lean In Canada and International Association of Business Communicators.
