The start of the school year is an exciting and at times, emotional time for many children. We begin this workshop holding in mind the Montessori ethos of preparing ourselves to support children as they enter the new school year with its many opportunities and challenges. Transition, separation, re-connection, socialisation, and self-discovery all come together in this moment; inevitably resulting in a variety of different emotions for the children we work with. Some of these emotions present themselves clearly, and at other times they may be less easy to spot.
Workshop Highlights
· Welcoming all Feelings: Reflect on our own attitudes to emotions and how this might impact how we see the experiences and feelings of the children we work with.
· The Importance of ‘Felt Safety’: Gain insight into the concept of ‘felt safety’ and how we can create this in our environments through reflecting on the role of the adult, the child’s inner world, and the environment around them.
· Practical Strategies: Learn effective and meaningful strategies for supporting children’s feelings, including co-regulation, validation, attuned communication, plus ways to help children express their feelings safely.
· Inclusive Approaches: Explore why our approach to feelings must be inclusive of all children, making sure we are working in ways that are trauma-informed and neuroaffirming.
