About this event

Improve takedown and grappling skills in this new session designed for tournament prep.

In collaboration with Vancouver Sumo Tigers (VST), Sumo Sundays is excited to offer this regular, speed-round session. Participants will learn VST’s approach to sumo through safe sparring games and friendly competitions to enhance stance, upper body control, balance, footwork and more.

This is a condensed* drop-in for those interested in quicker and/or more regular sessions. Note that training uses a battle rope instead of the traditional dohyo — if you have your own mawashi or gi belt, we recommend bringing it to class.

VST writes: "Tiger Sumo has a very hands-on approach to practice. We noticed that even after practicing a technique many times, wrestlers would still revert to old habits during sparring. This stagnated growth and learning. We created safe sparring games and friendly competitions with rulesets designed to emphasize and enhance certain fundamental movements such as stance, upper body control, balance and footwork. Our wrestlers made fast improvements.

If you’re a BJJ competitor, football player, wrestler, or martial artist and would like to improve your takedown and grappling skills, try sumo with Vancouver Sumo Tigers!"

We encourage folks of all sizes and genders to participate. Each drop-in is priced at $15-22 (+ fees) on a sliding scale (monthly membership available February onward -- details TBA). Max. 14 people per session.

About the Instructor

Hugo Mansfield is a filmmaker, writer, amateur sumo wrestler and martial arts enthusiast. He started training on the beach with friends, and their small club slowly grew into a formidable sumo team now called Vancouver Sumo Tigers. A regular participant of Sumo Sundays since 2022, Hugo has competed at the annual Powell Street Festival and the 2024 basho. In the fall of 2024, he began co-teaching with Sumo Sundays' intermediate drop-in where he continues to provide support.

Frequently asked questions

What makes this different from the 2.5 hour sessions?

Monthly, longer sessions offer an in-depth approach to sumo with time for a group warm-up, a review of safety techniques, skill-building, mawashi-tying and the opportunity to spar on the full dohyo. 1-Hour Sumo is more frequent but condensed. Training also uses a rope instead of the dohyo.

It's my first time. What can I expect? What do I need to bring?

We recommend wearing comfortable athletic clothing + tight/cycling shorts for wearing under the mawashi. A water bottle is a must; mouthguards are recommended for sparring. If you have a mawashi or gi belt, bring it!

Who can participate?

Sumo Sundays aims to be inclusive of all bodies. This means no gendered matches and clothing is never optional (shirts on, please!) We encourage all sizes and genders to participate, including women, non-binary and gender-diverse folks.

What is your policy on COVID-19?

Masks are optional. We abide by provincial guidelines. If you are feeling unwell or showing symptoms of COVID-19, please refrain from attending.
