About this event

On April 1, 2025, the Institute or Peace & Diplomacy (IPD) and Carleton University co-host 'Taiwan and Canada: Domestic Politics and International Relations', a panel of scholars from Taiwan, the United States and Canada that will engage in a discussion on the nexus of Taiwanese domestic politics and international relations, including Taiwan-US and cross-straits relations, and implications for Canada-Taiwan ties.

Held at Carleton University in Ottawa, the panel will cover issues such as the political deadlock between the Executive and the Legislative Yuan, human rights and civic freedoms, regional security, and Taiwanese perspectives on the Trump presidency. This event is a rare opportunity to hear from experts who will go beyond conventional discussions that tend to ignore the role of domestic politics and civil society in Taiwan’s democratic evolution and international posture.

This is the first of two separate panel events, with the second discussing the same themes on April 2, 2025 in Toronto at the Munk School of Public Policy and Global Affairs. Register for the Toronto session here.

The Institute for Peace & Diplomacy (IPD) is a non-profit and non-partisan international affairs think tank dedicated to promoting dialogue, diplomacy, prudent realism, and military restraint—principles which we believe are the four cornerstones of sustainable peace in an increasingly complex and dynamic international system.

Through its publications, conferences, policy briefings, and recommendations, IPD will encourage policymakers, and leaders in government, civil society, and business community to adopt a more restrained and open-minded approach in managing the strategic challenges and geopolitical risks of the 21st century.
