Join Massy Arts, Massy Books, and Kinsale Drake for the launch of her book, The Sky Was Once a Dark Blanket on Thursday December 12th at 7PM. Joining her is jaye simpson, hosting and moderating an author discussion after a reading.

The event will be hosted at the Massy Arts Gallery, at 23 East Pender Street in Chinatown, Vancouver. We are located in the former MING WO building.
Registration is free or by donation and required for entry.
The gallery is wheelchair accessible and a gender-neutral washroom is on-site.

The Sky Was Once a Dark Blanket traverses the Southwest landscape, exploring intricate relationships between Native peoples and the natural world, land, pop culture, twentieth-century music, and multi-generational representations. Oscillating between musical influences, including the repercussions of ethnomusicology, and the present/past/future, the collection rewrites and rerights what it means to be Indigenous, queer, and even formerly-emo in the twenty-first century.
About the Author:
Kinsale Drake (Diné) is a winner of the 2023 National Poetry Series for her debut poetry collection THE SKY WAS ONCE A DARK BLANKET (University of Georgia Press, 2024). Her work has appeared in Poetry Magazine, Poets.org, Best New Poets, Black Warrior Review, Nylon, Teen Vogue, and elsewhere. She currently directs programming for NDN Girls Book Club, which distributes free books to Indigenous youth and communities. She currently lives in Nashville, TN as a graduate fellow in the MFA Program at Vanderbilt University.
