Tree Canada's National Tree Day Planting Event in Calgary

Tree Canada is excited to plant trees with the Calgary community in honour of National Tree Day. Come out and celebrate with us!

Tree Canada is excited to celebrate National Tree Day (NTD), presented by BMO. This is the biggest NTD celebration yet, with planting events taking place across the country on both the Wednesday and Saturday of National Forest Week.

Join us to plant trees in your community and connect with nature. Volunteers will dig holes then place, plant and mulch 300 trees. Tree Canada experts and volunteers will be there to provide support and answer your tree questions. We’ll also provide gloves and shovels! This event is completely FREE!


How you'll be making an impact

We are thrilled to support this project that is part of the Friends of Fish Creek’s Poplar Forest Stewardship campaign. The goal of this event is to augment and preserve the beautiful native poplar riverine forest.


Free Food:

This is a catered event! Volunteers can grab a snack and beverage, courtesy of Starbucks.


What to wear and bring:

Volunteers should wear and bring the following:

  • Water bottle
  • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots
  • Long pants
  • Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Hat
  • Hand sanitizer

This rain or shine event will take place unless the forecast calls for thunderstorms or very heavy rainfall.

Meeting Point and Parking:

Volunteers will meet by the Sikome Aquatic Facility Lake Shop. There is a parking lot nearby.


Terrain:

The planting site is a riverine forest floor with uneven ground, long grass and fallen logs.

The level of physical activity required for this event is moderate.


Amenities:

Washrooms are a two to three city block walk away, at the Boat Launch or the Hull Woods parking lots. If the Sikome Aquatic centre is open there are washrooms there, but it is currently closed for renovations and there is no guarantee it will be open at the time of planting.

What should I wear and bring to the event?

Please ensure you wear sturdy, closed toe shoes, pants, comfortable and weather appropriate clothing, and please bring water.

Do I need any prior experience to participate?

No prior experience is necessary! Our experts will provide all the tools, instructions, and guidance you need to plant trees effectively.

Will there be restroom facilities available at the planting site?

Washrooms are a two to three city block walk away from the planting site.

What happens if it rains or the weather is inclement?

We monitor the weather closely. In case of light rain, we typically proceed with the event. For severe weather conditions, we will notify participants of any changes or cancellations in advance.

How physically demanding is tree planting?

Tree planting can involve moderate physical activity, including digging holes, carrying plants, and walking on uneven terrain. Volunteers can work at their own pace.

Will there be refreshments or food provided during the event?

Volunteers will receive a meal and drink courtesy of Harveys. Please feel free to bring your own additional food if you have specific dietary preferences or needs.

Can I earn volunteer hours for participating?

Yes, we can provide confirmation of your participation and the number of hours contributed upon request.
