Turtle conservation volunteer opportunity with The Land Between charity!
All 8 of Ontario's turtles are at risk. One of the leading causes of their decline in southern Ontario is road mortality. To reduce turtle road mortality in Haliburton County, we are installing a roadside mitigation system at two sites, on Glamorgan Rd and Gelert Rd. The system works with pre-existing culverts (AKA turtle tunnels) to guide the turtles under the road and prevent them from entering the roadway. This work will take place between Monday October 21st and Saturday November 30th (excluding Sundays) and is weather dependent.
What to expect:
Volunteers will help hand dig and install a half-barrel steel mitigation system on the side of the road, as well as backfill them.
What to bring:
- Steel-toed boots
- Lunch, snacks
- Water
- Clothing appropriate for laborious work (dress for the weather!)
- PPE (high visibility vest, hard hat, gloves) will be provided, but volunteers are welcome to bring their own if they'd like
