Urban Illuminations
This is a ground-level outside art installation at Assembly.
Gillian Richard’s paintings (left) have focused on the exploration of often overlooked and unremarkable spaces within the Vancouver landscape in recent years. Subjects such as parking lots, urban parks feature prominently in her work. Drawn to the unique quality of light these spaces possess, and fascinated by how they can evoke mood or suggest a human presence, Gillian seeks to capture a sense of intimacy and emotion from these otherwise ordinary and frequently stark environments.
Gillian Richards is a full-time artist based in Vancouver, Canada. She studied art at Okanagan College, the Banff Centre, and Emily Carr University, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in 2014. Over the past two decades, alongside her fine art practice, Gillian has completed numerous painting commissions for both local and international clients. She has also worked as a scenic artist in the film industry.

Chrissy Cheung’s images (right) compel the viewer to follow the lines and modes of connection through which she brings her works to vibrant life.
Though abstract in form, her paintings and drawings employ figurative material in complex, nuanced, and detailed ways. Through the complementary logics of collage, juxtaposition, and transformation, for example, such material — from the worlds of the real, the imaginary, the subconscious, and more — becomes powerfully allusive.
Vitally, Cheung’s work represents and embodies motion, both her own movement in their rendering and, subsequently and enticingly, that of the engaged viewer’s eyes. In this way, she captures the essence of temporal, physical artistic forms of dance and music, which are significant sources of inspiration.
Chrissy is the founder and director of the Painter8 Arts Society. In this work, she combines her knowledge as an artist who has shown in more than 50 exhibitions nationally and internationally with a vision for new contexts where art can be effectively realized.
