About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Join the Calgary Highlanders Regimental Museum & Archive for a public wargaming session at The Military Museums on Crowchild Trail. Presenting a moment in WWII history in a novel and interesting way, while open the doors of wargaming to new communities and people with interest, but perhaps not expertise.

Read about previous engagements fought.

Register to be a commander of a unit.

The evening aims to be a fun and dynamic discussion of Canadian World War II history and tactics, specifically focussed on the Calgary Highlanders who participated in the battle of Normandy directly following D-Day.

The scenario unfolds in turns: commanders are given a brief window to discuss together and issue orders, then we allow the simulation to run for 1 minute of real time action, followed by a review of the battlefield and key events. Then updates to orders become available and the process begins again.

Community Commanded Combat Mission sessions remove technical barriers by introducing a games master who handles the administration of the simulation. Instead of being responsible for technical commands for dozens of units, players are instead given a single unit to command and coordinate a mission together providing verbal orders and feedback.

All are welcome to watch the battle unfold, join in the discussion, or take responsability for command of a unit in action.

Can the community commanders secure the bridge over Faire Bissone, and open up a passage toward the liberation of France and Holland? Help us complete the task!

Frequently asked questions

Is the event free?

Yes, but donations to the museum itself are always appreciated. There is a tap-to-donate station in the atrium.

Is this event appropriate for children?

Yes, our junior commanders have a ton of fun! But this also involves serious subject matter. While there is no graphic violence in the simulation, personnel are killed and injured as part of combat.

Was this a real battle?

Our scenario is loosely modelled off real events fought by real Calgarians in World War II, but we emphasize accessibility, drama, and fun over minute details or rigid decisions.
