ABOUT SPEAKER
Anil J Mathew, Lead- Africa
Passionately curious. Relentlessly challenging.
Brought up in two countries, worked and lived in two continents and now based in Kenya, Anil has been an intrapreneur and an entrepreneur. As a team mate, manager, and leader. He spent nearly three decades working in sectors across banking, advertising, media, technology, and advisory services in roles across sales for banking products, account management in advertising, licensing, merchandising, broadcast and digital advertising sales in media and leading a team advising SME companies on branding, advertising and marketing.
Anil has been a part of small startup teams and large multinational multicultural teams. He had led and been led. Anil believes that behind the achievement of any organisational objective is the creation of shared purpose and vision. A leader is only as good as the team and vice versa.
Projects like a multiyear multimillion dollar sponsorship deal with a national tourism board focusing on nation branding and highlighting nuances of its tourism product or creation of a short form commercial film project to support the inaugural international TV campaign of an island nation or the licensing deal between the world’s favourite cat and mouse cartoon characters and a biscuit major ( that helped grow its sales by 50%), or the relaunch of a revered regional newspaper brand or the launch of a global grill major in India, are testimony of Anil’s ability to work consultatively with clients, developing an intimate understanding of their businesses and its challenges, and arriving at creative trajectory changing approaches to business growth.
Anil is a director at Moyology, a boutique advisory firm, based in Kenya, exploring need gaps in sub Saharan Africa in the media, advertising/marketing/education tech sectors, and working with international companies, with game changing products or services, from these sectors, looking at entering Africa, or African companies looking at internationalising their business.
He continues to be a student of decoding success in developing markets, emerging trends, big data, AI, VR and AR.
And a DIY enthusiast, a student of Buddhism and a rookie guitar player.
Professional background: Banking - BankAm. Advertising - Percept Advertising, Leo Burnett. Technology - ACT. Media - BBC World, Cartoon Network, TCM, HBO, CNN International.
