DESCRIPTION

This presentation will describe research done with 13 Indigenous kinship caregivers who shared stories about their experiences with child welfare assessment processes. The themes of the study will be summarized, using the words of the research participants to underscore their meaning. Then, the presentation will move to ideas for how social workers can use this learning to engage in assessment processes that are more culturally sensitive.

PRESENTER

Susan Burke is Métis and a proud member of Métis Nation BC, grateful to have lived her entire life in Northern BC on the beautiful traditional territory of the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation, part of the Dakelh people's territory. Métis scholars highlight the importance of engaging in reciprocal relationships with contemporary Métis and First Nations communities; she is privileged to be an active member of the Métis community in Northern BC and to have lived and worked alongside Métis and First Nations peoples there throughout her life. Her career has included 20 years as a child welfare social worker, during which she developed a passion for contributing to children remaining with their families and communities. Her research interests include Indigenous child welfare, kinship care, and social work practice.
