About this event

SUNRISE SESSION SOLD OUT!

Join Monika Deviat, award-winning photographer and IGA hiking guide, for photography adventures in Banff National Park for World Photography Day! World Photography Day (WPD) is an annual, worldwide celebration of everything photography. It's a day for photography, no matter what nature delivers - explore, create, and experiment with techniques! WPD is a great motivator to get outside with your camera and create with an open mind. Banff offers many opportunities for photographers, from grand landscapes to tiny intriguing details in flora and geological features. There will be two separate sessions offered on August 19th, a sunrise session which will include a hike and a sunset session with no hiking, only short walks from parking areas.

Generally, there is a theme announced for each year for WPD. Once the theme is announced, we’ll do our best to find ways to incorporate it into our day (as long as it can be related to nature).

Don't miss this opportunity to celebrate World Photography Day in one of the most spectacular natural settings. Join in for one or both sessions, and have an unforgettable and inspiring experience!

The sunset/night session is the easy session - no hiking, just some short walks from parking areas and potentially around lake shores. This session is also the flexible one, our meeting time may be 6 pm or 8 pm depending on weather and our chances to see the Milky Way. Locations can include areas around the Town of Banff, such as Vermillion Lakes, Cascade Ponds, Two Jack Lake. Depending on the conditions, we may head up the Icefields Parkway, potentially as far as Peyto Lake. Your instructor will go over how decisions are made based on weather (and all the apps used), location of sun (and clouds) and the direction of light, and more. Participants can expect to visit multiple locations. The session will end with photographing the Milky Way if clouds cooperate.

Monika Deviat is an award-winning photographer, educator and speaker and Nikon Ambassador based in Alberta, Canada. Monika’s photography spans multiple genres and demonstrates her versatility, technical skills, and unique perspective. Her career began with concert photography, taking her across North America to shoot hundreds of bands and dozens of festivals. In 2015, she shifted from shooting stars on stage to stars in the sky. Night photography has become Monika’s personal favourite genre, and it goes hand in hand with her landscape and adventure images. She is driven to capture unique scenes that inspire a sense of wonder and appreciation for the wild places surrounding us. Her photos have been published in national and international books, magazines, and webzines. As a workshop instructor, Monika is passionate about sharing knowledge and creating memorable experiences.

"Monika is obviously a great photographer who takes pride in the moments that she creates. What is not so obvious, and more importantly in my opinion, is that she enjoys educating people and is a great person. I have had the pleasure of taking a night photography editing course taught by her and have been in attendance for one of her night photography seminars. The passion that she has for the art of photography definitely shows through. In her course, she takes the time to teach. When she helps, she will give you her undivided attention at making sure you succeed in what you are trying to do. If you do not understand something that she presents, she will patiently ensure that what she is trying to convey makes sense to you.

Furthermore, she enjoys sharing information and this is evidenced by her personal blog and other articles that she has published. These are the traits of someone who truly enjoys teaching about their craft.

I can say that in the past years that I have known her, she is a pleasure to be around because she not only remembers people but takes the time to actually talk. If you have an opportunity to learn from her, either by taking a course, listening to her talk, or hiring her as either as an instructor or as a photographer, please do so. You will have no regrets."
